The opposition in Côte d’Ivoire has announced a major mobilization for October 4, uniting key parties including Laurent Gbagbo’s PPA-CI and the PDCI, ahead of the presidential election scheduled for October 25, 2025.
Michel Gbagbo, executive vice-president of the PPA-CI, addressed supporters in Abobo, northern Abidjan, on Saturday, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “Enough is enough,” a movement created by his party to highlight societal grievances.
He called on activists to fully commit to what he described as a democratic struggle, urging them to demonstrate their strength during the upcoming march.
“This march will be a mass rally to say no to the candidacy of RHDP President Alassane Ouattara, who is seeking a fourth term, which the opposition considers unconstitutional,” Michel Gbagbo declared.
The meeting was attended by Patrick Mangoné Bi, Deputy Secretary General of the PPA-CI, who assured party leaders of the activists’ determination.
Continuing the mobilization campaign, Michel Gbagbo visited Port-Bouët on Sunday, September 28, holding discussions in Gonzagueville with local party officials and members of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), Lider, the PDCI, as well as representatives from community associations and local forums.
He emphasised that the October 4 march would also denounce the disqualification of several opposition figures, including Laurent Gbagbo, Tidjane Thiam, and Affi N’Guessan, while advocating for conditions to ensure an inclusive, democratic, and peaceful election process.
Citing the importance of national stability, Michel Gbagbo said, “Côte d’Ivoire needs peace, and the government has an obligation to create a climate of serenity.” He noted that the specific itinerary for the demonstration would be announced in an upcoming press conference.
The march represents a significant moment in the country’s pre-election period, highlighting the growing tensions and political stakes in Abidjan as the nation approaches a highly contested vote.
