The Minister of Water and Forests of Ivory coast, Laurent Tchagba, is currently on a strategic mission to Brazil aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation and drawing lessons from the South American nation’s renowned agroforestry and forest restoration policies.
Spanning from July 8 to 11, the visit comes as Ivory coast seeks innovative and sustainable solutions to enhance its forest management systems.
Brazil, globally acknowledged for its pioneering work in tropical forestry, offers a wealth of experience that Minister Tchagba hopes to harness and adapt to Ivorian realities.
As part of the program, Minister Tchagba is set to hold a key meeting on July 10 with officials from Itamaraty, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This high-level dialogue will focus on structuring bilateral cooperation across the forestry, climate, agriculture, and technology sectors.
The discussions aim to unlock access to Brazilian technical cooperation, including knowledge transfer and institutional support.
Topics on the agenda include joint training programmes, applied research initiatives, and broader South-South collaboration—particularly with top institutions such as EMBRAPA, Brazil’s Agricultural Research Corporation.
In addition, Minister Tchagba will meet with Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment to examine the country’s national strategy for large-scale forest restoration.
The exchange will allow the Ivorian delegation to assess legal and political frameworks Brazil uses to manage and rehabilitate its tropical forests.
Further engagements include a roundtable discussion involving Brazilian institutional stakeholders and private sector representatives, followed by technical meetings with the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and EMBRAPA.
These sessions will delve into forest concession frameworks, case study analyses, and environmental protection strategies.
The Minister is also scheduled to consult with executives at the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), which finances major environmental and agroforestry initiatives across Brazil.
Minister Tchagba’s visit is viewed as a pivotal step in strengthening Côte d’Ivoire’s environmental governance.
By tapping into Brazil’s expertise, the Ivorian government aims to implement practical, climate-smart forestry policies rooted in agroforestry and sustainable land management.
