Ivorian coupé-décalé star Maury Féré Soumahoro, known as “Molare,” has been banned from driving for five years following a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a woman in Abidjan.
The decision was announced on Thursday, 25 September 2025, after Molare appeared before the Special Commission for the Suspension and Withdrawal of Driving Licences at the General Directorate of Land Transport and Traffic (DGTTC).
Speaking in a solemn tone, the artist admitted his responsibility in the accident and expressed remorse. He offered his condolences to the victim’s family, saying he deeply regretted the tragedy.
The commission found him guilty of dangerous driving, lack of control of his vehicle, and endangering the lives of others. After deliberation, it ruled to withdraw his licence until 2030. The Ministry of Transport said the sanction underscores the importance of accountability and reinforces that negligence behind the wheel will not be tolerated, especially when lives are lost.
Molare, a prominent figure in Ivory Coast’s music scene and one of the pioneers of the popular coupé-décalé genre, was initially detained following the crash before being released on bail earlier this month.
The accident occurred on 2 July 2025 in Angré 8e Tranche, a neighbourhood in the upscale Cocody district of eastern Abidjan. The singer reportedly lost control of his vehicle and fatally struck 38-year-old Elise Tolah, who later succumbed to her injuries.
On 17 July, a detention order was issued against Molare, who spent several weeks in custody before his release on 15 September. His latest court appearance has now led to the suspension of his driving rights.
The case has attracted significant public attention, highlighting both the risks of reckless driving and the government’s determination to ensure that no one is above the law.
