The 65th anniversary of Ivory Coast’s independence will be commemorated in Agboville with celebrations centred on unity, peace, and fraternity, the departmental prefect, Sihindou Coulibaly, announced during a preparatory meeting on Monday.
Speaking at the prefecture alongside department heads, representatives of women’s and youth associations, and religious and traditional leaders, Coulibaly stressed that this year’s events would carry added significance due to the tense political climate ahead of the presidential election.
“Due to the particular context marked by the presidential election, an interreligious prayer is planned, during which all religious denominations will gather in the same space to pray together for peace and a peaceful election. This prayer will probably be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025,” he said.
The prefect confirmed that the central feature of the celebrations will be a parade, supported by a series of cultural and recreational activities, including a concert. He urged the participation of all socio-professional groups and called on local communities to fully engage in the festivities.
“Independence Day is a time to come together before the elections. Every neighborhood must be in turmoil, and women’s and youth associations must mobilize. Start preparing for the parade now. I’m counting on you,” Coulibaly told those gathered.
The commemorations will not be limited to Agboville’s main town. A parallel celebration is scheduled to take place in the sub-prefecture, specifically in the village of Grand-Yapo, ensuring broader community involvement in marking the national milestone.
Organisers say this year’s independence observance is intended not just as a tribute to the nation’s history, but as a collective moment to reinforce social cohesion and foster harmony ahead of a pivotal election season.
