Seventy-one candidates participated in the inaugural session of the Trade Qualification Certificate (CQM) in Aboisso, held from September 15 to 19, 2025.
The examination, supervised by the Chamber of Trades and the Ministry of Technical Education, Vocational Training and Apprenticeship, assessed practical and oral skills across a wide range of trades.
Émilienne Kadja, the Departmental Director of Technical Education and Vocational Training, said candidates were tested in fields including hairdressing and beauty, mixed sewing, plumbing, tiling, building electricity, painting, welding, moped repair, auto mechanics, and carpentry.
“The assessments are designed to evaluate both theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise acquired through apprenticeship,” she explained.
Hilaire Ahui from the General Inspectorate of Technical Education highlighted the significance of the CQM as a state-recognized diploma. “The CQM certifies skills that apprentices acquire from their masters in informal settings.
It targets young apprentices, craftsmen, workers, and employees whose professional know-how has not yet been formally validated,” he said.
Benoît Ahoussi, national supervisor for the Sud-Comoé region, praised the smooth administration of the exams but noted a lower-than-expected turnout.
“Despite the smooth running of the tests, fewer craftsmen attended. In a context of numerous ongoing construction projects, the CQM is an essential asset for securing contracts,” he remarked.
The craft sector is a vital component of Côte d’Ivoire’s economy, contributing 19.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing nearly three million people, most of whom work informally. Established by Decree No. 2014-829 on September 18, 2014, the Trade Qualification Certificate seeks to professionalize the sector, enhance competitiveness, and formally recognise the skills of craftsmen across the country.
Officials emphasised that the CQM not only strengthens the status of skilled workers but also aims to create a more structured, competitive craft industry capable of meeting both domestic and regional demands.
For many participants, the certificate represents a key step towards formal recognition and broader economic opportunities within Côte d’Ivoire’s growing craft sector.
