Guinea has officially named Portuguese coach Paulo Jorge Rebelo Duarte as the new head of its senior national football team, the Syli National, as part of a broader effort to restructure and revitalise the squad.
The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) confirmed the appointment in a press release on Monday, following a formal call for applications launched in June in partnership with the Ministry of Sports.
“The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Paulo Jorge Rebelo Duarte as the new coach of the Guinean National Team,” the statement said.
It added that the official presentation of Duarte is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at a press conference, with further details to be communicated shortly.
The federation also expressed gratitude to all candidates who applied, wishing the new coach success in his mission to strengthen Guinean football.
Duarte, 56, brings extensive experience in African football. He has previously led the national teams of Burkina Faso (2007–2012, 2015–2016), Gabon (2013–2014), and most recently Togo, a post he left in June 2024.
He also had a brief stint at Saudi club Al-Kholood during the 2024–2025 season, departing in October 2024.
The Portuguese tactician faces the immediate challenge of guiding Guinea through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting with crucial matches against Somalia and Algeria in September 2025.
The FGF’s decision follows a competitive selection process that drew 62 applications, highlighting the significance and appeal of this key position within African football.
The appointment of Duarte forms part of a wider strategy to reinvigorate the national team and enhance Guinea’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
With his proven track record and deep understanding of African football, Duarte is expected to bring tactical discipline and experience to a team aiming to assert itself in upcoming international competitions.
