Authorities in Conakry have launched an investigation after the lifeless body of a fisherman was discovered at dawn on Wednesday, July 23, beneath a fish shed at the bustling Boulbinet landing stage.
The victim, identified as Ousmane Bangoura, a Sierra Leonean national, was found by local workers arriving for the morning fish market. Police forensic teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to conduct preliminary examinations.
According to the official report, Bangoura had been suffering from a descending abdominal hernia. Investigators also observed a pronounced yellow discoloration of his teeth, a condition frequently linked to long-term abuse of harmful substances.
Several witnesses described the deceased as a known drug user in the area. Speaking to investigators, Bangoura’s uncle revealed that the family had made repeated attempts to help him seek medical care and rehabilitation.
“I gave him money several times so he could get treatment, but instead, he used it to buy drugs,” the uncle said, expressing frustration over his nephew’s refusal to accept help and his tendency to conceal his struggles from relatives.
The discovery has shocked the local fishing community, where Bangoura had been a familiar figure despite his personal challenges. Police have not yet confirmed the official cause of death but said further medical examinations would be carried out to determine whether underlying health issues or substance use played a role.
The Boulbinet landing stage, one of Conakry’s busiest fish markets, draws hundreds of fishermen and traders daily. Authorities say additional patrols will be deployed in the area to maintain order as investigations continue.
Police have urged anyone with information regarding Bangoura’s final hours to come forward as the inquiry remains ongoing.
