Guinea and senegal sign landmark fisheries agreement to boost sustainable development

Conakry, Guinea — In a significant step toward regional integration and sustainable marine resource management, Guinea and Senegal have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) on fisheries and aquaculture.
The agreement was formalized during the Sixth Major Joint Cooperation Commission held in Conakry on 22–23 May 2025.
The strategic MoU reflects a joint commitment from both nations to enhance collaboration in sustainable management of marine resources and development of aquaculture.
It is seen as a blueprint for fostering regional integration, promoting environmental sustainability, and achieving shared socio-economic progress.
To put the agreement into action, Guinea’s Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Fatima Camara, led a high-level technical delegation to Dakar.
During the mission, both sides finalized the implementation protocols and officially signed the accord alongside the Senegalese Minister of Fisheries.
“The exploitation, management, and conservation of fisheries resources; development of aquaculture and promotion of technological exchange; fisheries surveillance and maritime safety; marine research and scientific cooperation; and the processing, sanitary quality, and marketing of fishery and aquaculture products,” are among the core pillars of the protocol, stated Minister Fatima Camara during the signing.
Speaking at the ceremony, Camara described the MoU as a “historic milestone” in the bilateral relationship between Conakry and Dakar.
“It also reflects a strong political will from both sides to create a robust, modern, and sustainable partnership aligned with the vision of a united, self-reliant, and cooperative Africa,” she added.
Her Senegalese counterpart welcomed the agreement with optimism, calling it “a major breakthrough” for fishery stakeholders in both countries. She emphasized that the partnership would enhance knowledge exchange between technical teams and facilitate international trade of marine products.
This agreement marks a key achievement in Guinea’s push for sub-regional cooperation, led by Minister Fatima Camara. Since taking office, Camara has been actively promoting the country’s fishing sector, recently representing Guinea at the third UN Ocean Conference (UNO3) in Nice, France, and the Women Summit in Casablanca, Morocco, under the theme: “Innovating Together: Women Driving Change in Africa.
