Ghanaian police have arrested 10 individuals and confiscated nine firearms in separate operations across Akwatia, as part of heightened security measures ahead of the upcoming by-election in the Eastern Regional town. The by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command said the operations, conducted on August 22 and 23, targeted individuals unlawfully in possession of firearms.
Authorities retrieved eight pump-action guns and one locally manufactured single-barrel firearm, along with corresponding ammunition.
The suspects arrested include Enoch Asiedu, 32; Lu Youyan, 58, a Chinese national; Stephen Nkansah, 36; Peterson Joseph, 42; Bernard Kumi Ofosu, 33; and Joshua Amenuku.
The remaining four individuals were also taken into custody but have not been publicly named.
Police spokespersons emphasised that the operations were part of a broader effort to ensure a safe and peaceful electoral process. “These proactive measures are intended to prevent any form of violence or intimidation during the by-election,” the statement read.
The firearms seizures follow a meeting between police leadership and representatives of the two major political parties in the region – the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The discussions focused on strategies to guarantee a violence-free election.
Authorities highlighted that securing weapons and detaining suspects in advance of polling day is part of a long-term strategy to safeguard the democratic process. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
The Akwatia by-election comes amid heightened political tension, and security forces are taking extensive measures to prevent disruptions. Local officials say that close monitoring and collaboration with the community are crucial to maintaining order.
Police continue investigations into the source of the firearms and are coordinating with local and international agencies to trace their origin. Those arrested are being held in custody as legal proceedings progress.
