Ghanaian police have launched a manhunt for four suspects following a violent robbery at a gold buying shop in the country’s Western Region, which ended with one of the attackers fatally shot and two others injured in a shootout with law enforcement.
The robbery unfolded on July 30 at around 5:30 p.m. when a gang of six armed men stormed Essama’s gold trading business in Teleku Bokazo.
According to a statement from the Western Regional Police Command released Friday, the assailants were wielding AK-47 rifles and machetes.
Responding swiftly to a distress call, police units pursued the suspects, who fled in the direction of the nearby Salman community. The pursuit escalated into an armed confrontation as the suspects opened fire on officers.
One of the robbers, 34-year-old Abdul Rahman, sustained critical injuries during the shootout and was taken to St. Martin De Porres Hospital in Eikwe.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, and his body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The attack left two employees of the gold shop wounded—29-year-old Samuel Appiah and 45-year-old Kwamena Nkrumah—both struck in the thigh.
They were rushed to hospital and are currently receiving treatment.
In a breakthrough, police arrested Mohammed Adamu, 25, on August 1.
His name had reportedly been disclosed by the deceased suspect, Abdul Rahman, prior to his death. Adamu is currently in custody and assisting police with ongoing investigations.
During the search operation, authorities recovered a cache of abandoned weapons and equipment hidden in nearby bushland.
The seized items include two AK-47 rifles, nine rounds of live ammunition, two BB cartridges, and two motorcycle keys.
The Western Regional Command reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the remaining suspects, stating that “efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring all perpetrators to justice.”
