Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has died suddenly, plunging the nation into mourning and drawing tributes from across Ghana’s political spectrum.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), to which he belonged, confirmed his passing on Tuesday, calling it “a profound shock.”
The NPP Eastern Regional Executive Committee described the loss as casting “a dark cloud” over the Akwatia constituency, where Kumi was affectionately known as the “Akwatia Star Boy.”
Kumi was celebrated for his tireless dedication to local development and steadfast promotion of the party’s ideals. Though the cause of his death has not been disclosed, those who worked closely with him remembered a man of humility and passion, deeply committed to public service.
In an official statement, Evans Osei Yeboah Tsooboi, the NPP’s Eastern Regional Communications Officer, extended sympathies to the MP’s family, traditional leaders in Akwatia, and the wider national party community.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia paid tribute on social media, hailing Kumi as a “loyal patriot.” Parliament, in a gesture of national grief, suspended all sittings indefinitely.
During the emergency session, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin remembered Kumi as “a dedicated legislator,” praising his charisma and sense of duty. His motion to adjourn was immediately seconded by Majority Leader Mahamudu Ayariga.
Throughout the day, colleagues from both the NPP and opposition parties shared heartfelt tributes online, reflecting the deep respect Kumi commanded across party lines.
His unexpected passing leaves a vacuum not only in his constituency but also in the broader political fabric of the country.
Ernest Yaw Kumi’s legacy, shaped by sincerity and an unwavering commitment to his people, will be remembered as a model of public service in Ghanaian politics.
