ACCRA – Ghana has officially launched its 2025 Local Tertiary Scholarships Programme, offering 5,000 opportunities for the 2025/2026 academic year in a bid to promote equitable access to higher education through a fully digital application process.
Unveiled by the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat on July 30 in Accra, the scheme was described by Registrar Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei as a strategic move aligned with President John Mahama’s vision of inclusive education.
“This programme expands opportunities to nurture Ghana’s future leaders,” he stated at the launch.
According to the Secretariat’s guidelines, 2,000 of the scholarships are designated for academically outstanding but financially disadvantaged students enrolled in public tertiary institutions.
These awards will be administered through the institutions’ faculty offices.
The remaining 3,000 scholarships will be competitively allocated to eligible students across the country.
To qualify, applicants must be Ghanaian citizens, currently residing in the country, and must hold formal admission to an accredited tertiary institution.
The programme particularly targets Level 200 and above students in public universities, in line with the government’s existing “No Fee Stress Refund” policy for Level 100 students. However, students in private universities and Level 100 students at eligible institutions are also invited to apply.
The application process is entirely digital and hosted on the official portal, www.scholarships.gov.gh.
Applicants must create an account, upload necessary documents, and select their district of residence for interviews.
The application window is open from July 30 to August 15, 2025.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete an online aptitude test and attend in-person interviews at designated district offices between August 18 and August 30. Final results will be announced in early September.
Issuing a firm warning against fraud, Asafo-Agyei emphasized, “Applications are completely free, no payments or third-party agents are authorized.” He urged applicants to report any suspicious activity to the CID’s dedicated WhatsApp hotline at 0559 285 646.
“This initiative is an investment in Ghana’s next generation of minds,” Asafo-Agyei concluded, encouraging eligible students nationwide to take advantage of the opportunity.
