Ghanaian authorities have launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral TikTok video in which threats were made against President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady.
The video, which rapidly gained attention on social media, has raised serious concerns over the safety of the nation’s leadership and the spread of online threats.
Police have confirmed that two individuals, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have been arrested in connection with the video.
“They have been taken into custody to assist investigators in understanding the origins and dissemination of this threatening content,” officials said.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that efforts are ongoing to identify any additional persons who may have contributed to the production or distribution of the video. Authorities emphasised that the investigation remains active and that all leads will be thoroughly pursued.
This incident comes amid growing concerns globally over the misuse of social media platforms to circulate threatening or harmful material. Ghanaian officials are treating the matter with urgency, noting the potential implications for national security.
“The safety of our leaders and citizens is paramount. Any threats, whether online or offline, will be met with a full and rigorous response,” police authorities stated.
Social media users in Ghana have reacted with a mix of shock and condemnation. Many expressed concern over the speed at which potentially dangerous content can spread online, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in monitoring and regulating digital platforms.
As the investigation continues, authorities have called on the public to report any suspicious activity and to refrain from sharing content that may incite violence or threaten public figures. The case serves as a stark reminder of the growing intersection between digital communication and national security in the modern era.
