Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale-South, has pledged to uphold the educational legacy of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed by personally sponsoring 47 medical students.
The announcement was made during the Third Day Funeral Rites (Adua) of the late politician, who died in a tragic military helicopter crash on August 6.
Dr Murtala Muhammed had established an education fund aimed at supporting underprivileged students pursuing medical degrees, a programme that left a lasting impact on young Ghanaians.
His untimely death left many of these students uncertain about the future of their studies. At the funeral ceremony, they paid heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a steadfast advocate for youth education and welfare.
“I will make sure no student’s dream is cut short by this untimely loss,” Mr Iddrisu said, assuring the students that their medical education would continue uninterrupted. He vowed to personally oversee the sponsorship, emphasising his commitment to safeguarding the aspirations of these future healthcare professionals.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to preserve Dr Murtala Muhammed’s vision of nurturing talent and providing opportunities for young Ghanaians. Students attending the ceremony expressed their gratitude and urged both government and private individuals to continue supporting their educational journeys in honour of the late minister.
Prominent figures, including Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, also attended the funeral rites to pay respects, highlighting the wide-reaching influence of Dr Murtala Muhammed in Ghanaian politics and education. The tribute underscored his dedication not only to public service but also to empowering the next generation of leaders and professionals.
With this commitment, Mr Iddrisu aims to ensure that the educational fund continues to secure the future of aspiring medical students, keeping alive the vision of Dr Murtala Muhammed and reinforcing the importance of investing in youth development across Ghana.
