Germany eyes strategic partnership in Algeria’s renewable energy push

The German Federal Association for the Solar Industry (BSW Solar) has expressed strong interest in Algeria’s ambitious “Taqat+i” project, which focuses on expanding renewable energy, green hydrogen production, and energy efficiency.
In a high-level meeting this week, Noureddine Yassa, Algeria’s Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, welcomed a delegation from BSW Solar. The association represents more than 1,100 companies across the solar energy value chain, including production, storage, and distribution.
Discussions between Yassa and David Wedepohl, BSW’s Director General for International Affairs, centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation and identifying new avenues for investment and partnership—particularly with key Algerian energy players like Sonelgaz Group.
The two sides explored opportunities for localizing the manufacturing of solar energy system components in Algeria.
They also reviewed ways to benefit from German expertise to accelerate technology transfer and bolster Algeria’s renewable energy capabilities.
Capacity-building and professional training featured prominently in the talks, alongside potential collaborations in green hydrogen production, smart grid integration, and power transmission projects.
The meeting also revisited a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2024 between Sonelgaz and BSW Solar. The agreement aims to strengthen Algeria’s national energy infrastructure by facilitating the exchange of technical and engineering expertise.
“This partnership aligns with Algeria’s new energy vision, which places sustainable energy transition at the heart of national priorities,” Yassa affirmed.
He stressed that Algeria hopes to capitalize on its vast natural resources, skilled workforce, and existing infrastructure to accelerate its green transition.
Yassa also emphasized the importance of collaboration with German partners, calling BSW Solar an “ideal partner to transfer best practices and advanced technologies.”
In turn, the German delegation voiced keen interest in Algeria’s market potential. “We see promising long-term strategic opportunities in Algeria,” members of the delegation said.
BSW Solar plays a pivotal role in shaping solar energy policy across Germany and Europe and is instrumental in helping German companies expand into international markets by offering technical guidance and professional support.
