Gabon’s president Oligui Nguema commended by magistrates for embracing dialogue on judicial reforms

Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has received praise from the National Union of Magistrates of Gabon (SYNAMAG) for his open and constructive approach to addressing longstanding issues within the judiciary.
During a meeting held last Friday at the Palais Rénovation in Libreville, a delegation from SYNAMAG engaged in direct discussions with the Head of State, focusing on a range of critical challenges facing the judicial sector.
Top among these were demands for salary adjustments, the revaluation of judicial bonuses, and the urgent need to improve working conditions for magistrates.
The union hailed the President’s “spirit of listening, dialogue and openness,” describing the encounter as a meaningful step towards strengthening Gabon’s legal institutions.
“We reaffirm our commitment to contributing responsibly to the advancement of justice in our country,” said members of SYNAMAG in a joint statement following the meeting.
The magistrates also pledged to provide the President with a comprehensive report outlining their recommendations and evaluations of ongoing judicial processes.
The document, they said, will offer “a clear and structured perspective” on how to ensure the proper functioning of Gabon’s justice system.
President Oligui Nguema, who has consistently emphasized institutional reform since taking office, reiterated his commitment to judicial independence and public trust.
He urged SYNAMAG to expedite the delivery of “concrete, realistic, and sustainable proposals” that can serve as a foundation for meaningful reform.
He also endorsed the continued efforts of an ad hoc committee, established under his directive, tasked with studying and proposing reforms to the judiciary.
As Gabon navigates a period of political transition and institutional redefinition, the meeting underscores a renewed push for transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the nation’s legal system.
