Energy company Vaalco Gabon SA has inaugurated two newly renovated schools in Port-Gentil, reinforcing its commitment to education and community development under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
The official ceremonies on Thursday, 18 September, marked the reopening of La Balise II and Matanda primary schools following eight weeks of rehabilitation. The events were attended by Viannet Okouma, Managing Director of Vaalco Gabon, Pierre Onanga Ossounda, Director of the Provincial Academy, along with the heads of the schools, teaching staff, and local administrators.
The renovation projects are expected to directly benefit 1,963 pupils, offering safer and improved learning conditions. La Balise II Primary School will serve 812 students, while Matanda Primary School will provide a better environment for 1,151 children.
Company officials said the upgrades have created secure, modern facilities that will enhance both teaching and learning.
Beyond education, Vaalco Gabon also reaffirmed its solidarity with vulnerable children in Port-Gentil. The firm continues to support the CEMI and Mission Nissy orphanages through regular donations of food, school supplies, household appliances, and by organising festive activities such as annual Christmas events.
Looking ahead, the company announced a series of new projects aimed at strengthening local institutions. These include the planned rehabilitation of the Port-Gentil Governorate and the Governor’s residence, as well as providing equipment to the Port-Gentil Town Hall.
“These initiatives, part of the Diversified Investment Programme – Hydrocarbon Investment Programme (PID-PIH), aim to strengthen administrative infrastructure and support the functioning of local institutions,” said Managing Director Viannet Okouma.
He added that Vaalco Gabon’s wider vision is to make a lasting contribution to the social, educational, and human development of the country, placing youth and local communities “at the heart of its priorities.”
