The Beninese government has raised concerns over intimidation directed at its citizens in Lambaréné, Gabon, amid tensions surrounding the allocation of market spaces and new economic restrictions affecting foreign traders.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Benin issued a statement expressing “serious concern” about acts of harassment targeting members of the Beninese community in the Gabonese province.
The ministry highlighted that these incidents follow the implementation of new restrictions on certain economic activities conducted by foreign nationals.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of Beninese citizens abroad. It urged both the community and the authorities to exercise calm and restraint, emphasizing the importance of adhering strictly to the laws and regulations of the host country.
In coordination with Gabonese authorities, Benin plans to dispatch a mission in the coming days to identify and register Beninese nationals who may wish to return voluntarily. This initiative is intended to safeguard citizens while respecting the sovereignty of Gabon.
“Benin remains committed to the Pan-Africanist ideal and African solidarity,” the ministry stated. “Every African should feel at home anywhere on the continent.”
