
Gabon commemorated the 65th anniversary of its independence on Sunday, August 17, with a striking display of national pride along Libreville’s seaside boulevard.
The event combined military precision, civic engagement, and cultural pageantry, uniting citizens around the country’s republican values and history.
President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and First Lady Zita Oligui Nguema were greeted with widespread enthusiasm as they arrived for the ceremony. Applause, singing, and cheers underscored the deep connection between the Gabonese people and their leaders.
The First Lady’s elegance added refinement to the event, while the Head of State embodied solemnity and national unity.
Under the theme, “Defense and Security Forces: from the Transition to the 5th Republic,” the celebration featured a comprehensive parade, showcasing troop marches, motorized convoys, and aerial and maritime demonstrations.

Addressing the gathered forces, President Oligui Nguema paid tribute to the generations that have contributed to Gabon’s nation-building. “This moment was not just a ceremony. It was an act of remembrance, pride, and republican commitment,” he said. He emphasised that “peace, sovereignty and unity are never acquired, but are constant battles,” urging citizens to remain united in pursuit of a future grounded in order, justice, and dignity.
