In the run-up to Gabon’s local elections scheduled for 27 September, residents of the Lebombi Leyou department have shown strong support for candidates Berthe Boubou Bokoko and Victor Missanda, who are contesting under the coalition of Les Démocrates, UDERE, and UN.
After days of grassroots campaigning across villages, the two candidates appear to have built considerable momentum. “They have clearly explained to us what they intend to do if elected; that’s why we must vote for them,” one voter said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Boubou Bokoko, running for the Senate, and Missanda, vying for the presidency of the departmental council, have travelled extensively throughout the canton of Mberessé Mibili. Their campaign trail included stops in Botosso, Diagatebé, Magnima, Lemagna 1 and 2, Bissibilaye, Doumaye, and Mougniegué, where they engaged directly with residents in open discussions.
Through field visits, community meetings, and direct exchanges, the candidates were able to witness first-hand the daily challenges faced by the population. Chief among the concerns raised were limited access to clean drinking water, poor infrastructure, gaps in education and healthcare, and pressing demands for employment opportunities and local development.
The warm reception across villages underscored the sense of connection between the candidates and their communities. Both Boubou Bokoko and Missanda reiterated their commitment to ensuring that the voices of Lebombi Leyou are heard at decision-making levels.
“Our promise is to carry the concerns of our people with determination and integrity,” they said, highlighting their readiness to represent the department if given the mandate.
With just days to go before the polls, the strong mobilisation in Lebombi Leyou reflects both the enthusiasm of voters and the growing confidence in the coalition’s candidates.
