Gabon has overhauled its Civil Aviation Code in a sweeping reform aimed at modernising the country’s air transport sector and strengthening compliance with international aviation standards.
The revised code, introduced by the General Directorate of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and promulgated by presidential decree, replaces the 2008 framework and aligns Gabon’s aviation laws with regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The update brings significant changes to the sector, including a full institutional reorganisation, clearer distribution of responsibilities among aviation stakeholders, and a more robust legal framework to regulate air safety and security.
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of stricter penalties for companies found in serious violation of aviation laws. Under the new provisions, violators face substantial fines and, in severe cases, the immediate suspension or revocation of their operating certificates or licences.
According to ANAC, these measures are designed to enhance the safety and reliability of Gabon’s aviation industry, while boosting the country’s credibility on the regional and international stage.
“By revising the Civil Aviation Code, Gabon is laying the groundwork for a more structured and secure aviation system that meets global standards,” ANAC said in a statement, adding that the reforms will help foster growth and competitiveness in the industry.
The overhaul marks one of the most comprehensive updates to Gabon’s aviation laws in nearly two decades, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernisation and to ensuring the sector adheres to the highest safety benchmarks.
