Four people were injured, one seriously, when a fish transport vehicle overturned on the Abéché-Mongo highway, around 10 kilometers from the town of Mongo in eastern Chad.
The vehicle, which was heavily loaded with fresh fish from Lake Chad and en route to Abéché, lost control after one of its rear tires burst, causing it to overturn and scatter its cargo along the roadside.
“The accident occurred after the vehicle’s rear tire punctured.
This technical failure led to a loss of control, causing the truck to overturn on the roadway,” according to local officials.
Responding swiftly to the incident, the Sub-Prefect of Baro, Adelil Doumoullah Chogar, arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Authorities managed administrative procedures and facilitated the transportation of the injured to nearby medical centers for treatment.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the crash served as a stark reminder of the risks associated with long-haul transport of perishable goods in the region.
The Abéché-Mongo axis is a critical route for fish transportation from Lake Chad, supporting both local economies and food distribution in the province.
This stretch of road is heavily used by traders and suppliers transporting fresh fish, a major commodity for livelihoods in the region.
In the wake of the accident, local authorities emphasized the importance of proper vehicle maintenance.
“The authorities are taking this opportunity to reiterate the crucial importance of regularly checking the condition of vehicles, and particularly the tires, before any journey, especially with heavy loads,” officials noted.
The injured individuals are currently under close medical observation. Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to clarify the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
