In a determined effort to tackle extreme poverty and support vulnerable families, the Ivorian government has launched the “Family Meal” initiative in the Cavally region, prioritising 50 households headed by single mothers and widows.
At the launch ceremony held on Monday, July 14, 2025, in Guiglo, Regional Director of Solidarity, National Cohesion and the Fight against Poverty, Serge Kouakou N’Guessan, underscored the government’s commitment to targeting those most in need. “Many vulnerable households were identified, but we had to choose the 50 who genuinely needed real assistance,” he stated.
The “Family Meal” project, initiated by the Ministry of Solidarity under Minister Myss Belmonde Dogo, aims to offer immediate food and hygiene relief to those in dire socioeconomic conditions. The six-month programme will run from July to December 2025 and covers households from the departments of Guiglo, Bloléquin, Taï, and Toulepleu.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Mr. Kouakou emphasised that the government’s gesture is a clear message of solidarity. “We presented this project to tell them that the government is on their side,” he said.
Each selected household, consisting of five to ten members, received essential supplies valued at 50,250 CFA francs. The kits included rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, tomato paste, and hygiene items. All recipients are listed in the Single Social Register (RSU) and had not previously benefited from any state-run social welfare programme, including existing safety nets.
The regional director urged the beneficiaries not to sell the items in local markets and to instead use them to directly support their families. The initiative is expected to enhance food security and improve living conditions in some of the most marginalised communities of western Ivory coast.
