Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has awarded the European Union’s outgoing Ambassador, Artis Bertules, the prestigious “Medal of Merit for Cooperation and Development” in recognition of his service and contribution to the country over the past three years.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace in Bissau, celebrated the EU diplomat’s efforts in fostering strong ties between Guinea-Bissau and the European Union. President Embaló praised Bertules for maintaining neutrality in local politics and focusing on meaningful development initiatives.
“When Artis Bertules arrived in the country and presented his credentials, he told me he was the EU Ambassador to the Government and State of Guinea-Bissau. He demonstrated that he did not come here to engage in politics, but rather to represent the interests of the 27 EU member countries,” the Head of State recalled. “I realised then that he was not just an Ambassador but a true friend of Guinea-Bissau.”
Embaló described Guinea-Bissau as Bertules’ “second home” and extended an open invitation for him to return at any time.
Bertules, whose term is concluding, expressed gratitude for the recognition, calling it a testament to the longstanding partnership between the EU and Guinea-Bissau. “This honour reflects the tireless work of many people, both here and in Brussels, to strengthen our relations,” he said.
He highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including advancements in fisheries and maritime safety, the inauguration of the country’s largest solar power plant in Bolama, and the launch of new infrastructure projects linking Guinea-Bissau to its neighbours.
Bertules also noted improvements in public health, particularly maternal and child healthcare, as well as progress in water treatment, education, and vocational training. “These projects are vital to Guinea-Bissau’s future,” he stressed.
The award underscores the EU’s role as one of Guinea-Bissau’s key development partners and the strong diplomatic ties forged during Bertules’ tenure
