The state-of-the-art facility, supported by Chinese technical expertise and equipment, aims to transform the capacity of the country’s law enforcement in areas such as digital forensics, DNA testing, and complex crime analysis.
Addressing attendees at the launch, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the significance of the facility in modernizing Ethiopia’s law enforcement capabilities.
“A year and a half ago, when DNA testing was required, we had to rely on external resources,” Abiy wrote on social media following the ceremony.
He underscored that the new centre reflects the government’s commitment to equipping law enforcement agencies with advanced technology and expertise.
“Today, Ethiopia has established an institution capable of tackling DNA-related challenges domestically while also serving neighboring countries,” he stated, emphasizing the shift from sending DNA samples abroad, primarily to South Africa, for testing.
The event was attended by senior government officials, federal police representatives, and diplomats from various nations.
The Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia praised the centre’s launch, expressing confidence that it would benefit not only Ethiopia but also countries across East Africa and the broader continent.
China’s support, which included providing technical assistance and essential equipment, underscores the growing partnership between the two nations.
