Ethiopian Airlines has officially launched daily passenger flights between Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi, further expanding its footprint in the Gulf region and solidifying its position as Africa’s premier carrier. The new route, which commenced on 15 July 2025, marks the airline’s fourth operational hub in the United Arab Emirates.
An inaugural ceremony was held at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa to commemorate the launch.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including the airline’s Board Chairman, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, representatives from the UAE Embassy, and Ethiopian government dignitaries.
“The launch of this new route to Abu Dhabi is not only a testament to our growing partnership with Etihad Airways but also a significant step toward enhancing trade, tourism, and economic ties between Africa and the Gulf region,” said Group CEO Mesfin Tasew.
Abu Dhabi joins Dubai International (DXB), Al Maktoum International (DWC), and Sharjah as Ethiopian Airlines’ fourth destination in the UAE.
The expansion follows the introduction of four weekly flights to Sharjah in June 2025, furthering the airline’s collaborative venture with Etihad to strengthen air travel links between Ethiopia and the UAE.
The carrier now operates over 100 weekly flights to 13 destinations across the Middle East, demonstrating a robust commitment to regional connectivity.
With this latest addition, Ethiopian Airlines serves 160 destinations globally, spanning five continents.
The airline recently garnered Skytrax’s coveted “Best Airline in Africa” award for the eighth consecutive year, reinforcing its reputation for operational excellence and customer service.
As part of its ambitious “Vision 2035” strategy, Ethiopian aims to position itself among the world’s top 20 aviation groups by further enhancing its global network and partnerships.
The new Abu Dhabi service is expected to boost both business and leisure travel while offering seamless connections between Africa and the Middle East, a cornerstone of Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term growth plan.
