Prominent Egyptian MP and journalist Mostafa Bakry has strongly condemned a recent statement by Hamas criticising Egypt’s role in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling the remarks “shocking” and a “scandal.”
Speaking during a televised interview with Al Hadath, Bakry described Hamas’ stance as ungrateful and inconsistent, especially in light of past praise from the group’s senior official, Khalil Al-Hayya, for Cairo’s efforts in supporting the Palestinian people.
“I previously listened to Khalil Al-Hayya in Cairo, and he offered high praise for Egypt’s assistance to Gaza,” Bakry said.
“He said, ‘We value the size of aid Egypt has provided to our people in Gaza, and we appreciate President Sisi’s firm stance in support of the Palestinian cause and rejection of displacement, as well as all Egypt’s economic and humanitarian contributions.’”
Bakry lashed out at Hamas’ latest communiqué, describing it as part of a coordinated smear campaign allegedly aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood and its international affiliates.
“The statement issued by Hamas is disturbing and follows the same pattern as the orchestrated attacks led by the Muslim Brotherhood and its global network,” he said.
The veteran MP added that Egypt has been instrumental in aiding the besieged Gaza Strip, contributing approximately 70 to 80 percent of all humanitarian assistance that has entered the enclave during the crisis.
“We had hoped Hamas would stay true to the national liberation path it once claimed, distancing itself from the Brotherhood,” he remarked.
“But sadly, when Al-Hayya speaks in a way that subtly blames Egypt for the blockade, and then comes a scandalous statement so far removed from reality—it is simply unacceptable.”
Bakry’s comments reflect mounting tensions between Cairo and Hamas as Egypt continues to position itself as a key mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict while facing criticism from some Palestinian factions.
