Egypt strengthens strategic alliance with Mali and Sahel States confederation

In a significant show of regional solidarity, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty met with Mali’s transitional leader, Army General Assimi Goïta, in Bamako on Thursday, July 24, 2025, to deliver a personal message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and reaffirm Cairo’s steadfast support for Mali and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES).
The high-level meeting underscored Egypt’s deepening diplomatic and economic engagement with Mali and its commitment to backing the broader goals of the AES, a regional bloc aimed at enhancing security and cooperation among Sahelian nations.
At the conclusion of the audience, Dr. Abdelatty stated, “I am carrying a written message from the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah AL-Sisi, intended for his brother and Malian counterpart, Army General Assimi Goïta.”
He emphasized Egypt’s readiness to boost bilateral cooperation in critical sectors such as military and security affairs, economic development, and infrastructure.
“Egypt supports Mali in its fight against terrorism, both in terms of security and through ideological and sustainable development approaches,” the minister said.
Accompanied by a large delegation of Egyptian business leaders, Dr. Abdelatty also explored investment opportunities in mining, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
He stressed that this collaboration would be guided by the principles of South-South cooperation, mutual respect, and sovereign equality.
Highlighting Egypt’s broader commitment to regional peace and stability, he added, “Egypt’s readiness to support the member states of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) in their efforts to achieve stability, combat terrorism, and consolidate their sovereignty is unwavering.”
This visit follows the recent trip to Cairo by Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and signals accelerating momentum in Egypt-Mali relations.
As both nations align on key security and development priorities, the partnership appears set to play a vital role in shaping the future of the Sahel region.
