Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, reaffirmed the government’s determination to maintain an attractive and stable investment climate, highlighting the Sukari gold mine as a leading example of public-private cooperation in the mining sector.
Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with Gillen Duran, CEO and Chief Financial Officer of AngloGold Ashanti, and Hoda Mansour, Vice President and Managing Director of Sukari Gold Mines, Minister Badawi underscored Egypt’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships and facilitating investor operations.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum.
“The government is keen to work closely with its strategic partners and ensure stability in the investment environment,” Badawi stated. He emphasized that the success of the Sukari mine reflects the potential of effective collaboration between the state and private sector entities.
Badawi also highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to streamline processes and remove bureaucratic obstacles through the establishment of direct communication channels.
He pointed to recent reforms in the Mineral Resources Law and the introduction of a new model for mineral exploitation, designed to encourage investment and open new avenues for exploration.
Gillen Duran praised the progress achieved at the Sukari mine, describing her site visit as a defining moment in understanding the scale and quality of operations.
She noted that 97% of the workforce at the mine is Egyptian, underscoring the project’s role in local employment and capacity-building.
“The acquisition of the Sukari mine has elevated our global performance, and it is now a key asset in AngloGold Ashanti’s international portfolio,” Duran said.
The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration with the Egyptian government, particularly by accelerating the issuance of exploitation licenses to emerging companies.
This initiative is expected to broaden the base of mining investments and enhance exploration efforts across both existing and new concession areas.
