Egypt delivers message from president el-Sisi to Nigerian leader in push for stronger continental ties

Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty has delivered a written message from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscoring the strong and historic ties between the two nations and reaffirming Cairo’s commitment to enhancing cooperation across the African continent.
During a high-level meeting held in Abuja on Monday evening, Abdel Aaty conveyed President El-Sisi’s “greetings and appreciation” to President Tinubu. The letter highlighted Egypt’s keenness to deepen bilateral coordination with Nigeria in areas of mutual interest, especially regional security and development.
“The message confirmed the depth of the distinguished bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries, and expressed the aspiration to strengthen cooperation and coordination in various fields to support security and stability on the African continent,” Abdel Aaty said.
The foreign minister noted that his visit builds on outcomes from a meeting between the two presidents held in Brazil in November 2024, as well as the third round of bilateral political consultations in Cairo in January 2025, which concluded with an agreement to elevate Egypt-Nigeria relations to a full strategic partnership.
Abdel Aaty emphasized the importance of leveraging both nations’ capacities to boost collaboration in key sectors such as trade, investment, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare, construction, and industry. He revealed that he was accompanied by a delegation of 30 prominent Egyptian business leaders aiming to explore new opportunities for joint ventures.
In a significant diplomatic nod, Abdel Aaty thanked Nigeria for its official support of Egypt’s candidate, Dr. Khaled El-Anany, for the position of Director-General of UNESCO, noting the broad African backing since his nomination in April 2023.
The discussion also tackled joint efforts to combat terrorism. Abdel Aaty reiterated Egypt’s readiness to share expertise in counter-terrorism strategies, training, and deradicalization programs through Al-Azhar and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding.
Regional developments in the Sahel, West Africa, the Horn of Africa, Sudan, and Libya were also reviewed, with both sides stressing the need for greater African unity to address shared security and development challenges.
President Tinubu, in turn, praised Egypt’s constructive leadership on the continent and conveyed his appreciation to President El-Sisi. He affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to further expanding cooperation with Egypt on regional and international platforms to achieve tangible benefits for both nations .
