Egypt assumes leadership of African Union peace and security council amid complex challenges

Egypt is set to take over the presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the month of October, beginning on October 1, 2024.

This was confirmed by Egypt’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Dr. Mohamed Gad, who outlined the nation’s plans to strengthen the role of the council in maintaining peace, security, and stability across the African continent.

Ambassador Gad highlighted that Egypt’s leadership of the PSC comes at a time of significant regional and global challenges.

These security and developmental issues require collective efforts and transparent consultation to devise comprehensive solutions aimed at fostering long-term peace and stability, in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 for sustainable development.

In his statement, Ambassador Gad revealed that Egypt’s presidency will kick off with several key events.

These include an interactive meeting in Cairo between the council and Egypt’s Foreign Minister, as well as discussions with the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

A high-level session will also be held focusing on the critical connection between peace, security, and development, aligning with Egypt’s commitment to post-conflict reconstruction and development.

One of the major highlights of Egypt’s tenure will be a historic visit to Port Sudan, the first of its kind since the Sudanese crisis erupted in April 2023.

This visit underscores Egypt’s dedication to supporting the people of Sudan and strengthening solidarity with Sudanese state institutions, while also encouraging the African Union to take on its responsibility in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Additionally, Ambassador Gad outlined that Egypt’s presidency will host several other important initiatives.

These include the annual consultations between the PSC and the United Nations Security Council, as well as discussions with the African trio on the Security Council and the UN Peacebuilding Commission.

A joint session with the PSC and the African Union’s Permanent Representatives Sub-Committee will also be held to examine the financing of African peace operations, alongside a session on the situation in Somalia following the departure of the African Union Transition Mission.

Further sessions during Egypt’s presidency will focus on counterterrorism efforts across Africa, the humanitarian situation on the continent, the role of women in peace and security, and the impact of climate change on peace and security in Africa.

Notably, Egypt was elected by unanimous vote in February 2024 to serve a two-year term on the PSC as a representative of North Africa. This election is a testament to the confidence and appreciation of Egypt’s efforts in promoting peace, security, and stability throughout the African continent.

As Egypt steps into this leadership role, its presidency of the PSC promises to play a crucial part in addressing the pressing security challenges facing Africa and advancing the continent’s broader developmental goals.
