Egypt and Zambia explore joint pharmaceutical factory to boost Africa’s drug industry

In a major step toward deepening industrial integration across Africa, Egypt and Zambia are exploring plans to establish a joint pharmaceutical manufacturing facility aimed at strengthening local drug production and enhancing access to quality medicines across the continent.
Dr. Ali El-Ghamrawy, Chairman of Egypt’s Drug Authority, received a high-level delegation comprising representatives from Egypt’s Wadi El Nile Company and Zambia’s Pendulum Estates Ltd.
The visit comes as part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand into African markets and forge international partnerships in the pharmaceutical sector.
The proposed facility in Zambia is seen as a practical translation of Egypt’s vision to foster industrial collaboration with African nations, transfer expertise and technologies, and build local and regional pharmaceutical production capacity.
The initiative is expected to encourage joint investments, streamline regulatory cooperation, and position Egypt as a leading pharmaceutical hub in the region.
Dr. El-Ghamrawy emphasized the strategic priority of supporting initiatives that aim to localize pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. “The African market is one of the top targets for Egypt’s pharmaceutical expansion in the coming period.
This will benefit the health of African populations and contribute to the development and localization of drug production,” he stated.
Major General Mohamed Dabbour, Chairman of Wadi El Nile Company, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, describing the project as a “pivotal step” in the company’s expansion into African markets and efforts to domesticate drug manufacturing across the continent.
John Zulu, Chairman of Pendulum Estates Ltd., praised the partnership with Egypt’s Drug Authority and Wadi El Nile, calling it a “transformative alliance” that will strengthen Zambia’s healthcare system and provide high-quality pharmaceuticals to the local market.
The visiting delegation expressed deep appreciation for the strategic role played by Egypt’s Drug Authority in advancing the pharmaceutical industry, lauding its regulatory and technical expertise, which has elevated the profile of Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector regionally and globally.
Participants agreed that the partnership with the Egyptian authority is central to the success of the planned factory, citing the agency’s technical support, consulting, and regulatory facilitation as vital elements that will enable the project to improve access to quality medicines in Zambia and support broader health security across Africa.
In attendance from the companies were Major General Mohamed Dabbour, John Zulu, Bertha Musonda Chilechi, Lamboy Crispin Mwanza, and Mbatchi Mand, representing Pendulum Estates.
The initiative underscores the Egyptian Drug Authority’s commitment to advancing regional pharmaceutical cooperation and promoting investments that uplift Africa’s healthcare landscape.
