Egypt’s Minister of Health, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, held a high-level meeting with Dr. Victor Lugo, Advisor to the Colombian President on Middle East Affairs, to explore ways to strengthen medical aid for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The talks took place at the Ministry of Health headquarters in the New Administrative Capital on Monday, August 11, 2025.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, official spokesperson for Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population, highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between Egypt and Colombia and reaffirmed the commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation in healthcare.
“Our goal is to support the provision of medical services to Palestinian patients and injured individuals from Gaza, either by sending medical aid or facilitating their treatment in Egyptian hospitals,” he said.
The discussion centred on Colombia’s readiness to back Egypt’s efforts in delivering critical healthcare to those affected in Gaza, praising Egypt’s key humanitarian role in the region.
Plans were outlined for providing prosthetic limbs to injured Palestinians undergoing treatment in Egypt, including compiling lists of those in need and meeting their requirements.
Further cooperation involves expanding the capacity of Egyptian medical teams in specialised fields such as orthopaedics, plastic surgery, and prosthetics. Both sides agreed on the importance of preparing detailed needs assessments to enhance the quality of care delivered.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed opportunities for deeper collaboration between Egyptian and Colombian healthcare and research institutions, focusing on knowledge exchange and deployment of medical teams tailored to mutual priorities.
Representing Egypt were senior officials including Dr. Peter Wagih, Assistant Minister for Therapeutic Medicine, and Dr. Sherif Wadih, Advisor on Emergency Care. Colombia’s delegation included Carlos Colmenares, Chargé d’Affaires at the Colombian Embassy, and Barbara Mora, Third Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
This dialogue marks a significant step in international efforts to provide sustained medical support for Gaza’s vulnerable population amidst ongoing challenges.
