In a move aimed at improving regional connectivity and revitalising local trade, authorities in Cwango province have officially launched the rehabilitation of a major roadway linking the towns of Katoy 316 and Kolokoso.
The initiative, spearheaded by provincial governor Willy Bitwisila, was inaugurated during a ceremony held on Monday, July 7, at the Katoy junction on Route R1.
The project will see 50 kilometres of the total 78-kilometre stretch restored, under the supervision of the national Roads Office and financed by the National Road Maintenance Fund (FONER).
The launch ceremony drew a significant audience, including provincial government officials, members of the Provincial Assembly, representatives from security services, technical teams from the Roads Office and FONER, traditional leaders, and community figures.
Speaking at the event, Governor Bitwisila highlighted the strategic importance of the roadway, describing it as a key link for the province’s agricultural zones.
“This road serves one of the main production basins of Kwango province,” he noted. “Its rehabilitation will facilitate the evacuation of agricultural products to sales and consumption centres, and strengthen the connection between Kwango and Kwilu provinces.”
Emphasising the broader socio-economic impact, the governor added, “This road will boost the economy of our province.”
He called on the Roads Office to bring its “legendary technical expertise” to bear on the project and urged road users to ensure responsible and sustained use of the infrastructure once completed.
Local leaders and stakeholders have praised the project as a long-overdue step toward regional development, particularly in a province where poor road conditions have long hindered access to markets and essential services.
The rehabilitation is expected to ease the transportation burden on farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, and provide a more reliable corridor for trade between the central and western regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
