At a press conference held in the capital on Saturday, the collective of lawyers — alongside party members — sharply criticized what they described as serious irregularities in the legal proceedings targeting Dr. Masra. The president of Les Transformateurs was recently detained in a case his supporters insist is rooted in political retaliation rather than any proven wrongdoing.
Professor Sitack Yombatina Beni, speaking on behalf of the group, directly challenged the government’s actions, saying, “Does the government need to illegally abduct Dr. Succès Masra to try to justify its notorious inability, particularly to ensure the safety of people and their property?”
He further questioned the timing and motives behind the arrest: “Since the arrest of the president of the Transformers party, how many deaths have been recorded?” implying a diversionary tactic to distract from broader governance failures.
Calling the arrest “a matter of political revenge,” Professor Sitack condemned the move as a national disgrace that undermines unity and fosters division.
He appealed directly to the President of the Republic, asserting that the detention “is a disgrace for the country,” before adding, “Chad needs all its daughters and sons.
This repression has gone on long enough.”
The coordinator of Dr. Masra’s legal team expressed grave concern about the judicial process itself.
He characterized the hearing before the Indictment Chamber as “a mere formality,” arguing that the judge missed an opportunity “to make history” by not releasing the opposition leader in the absence of concrete evidence.
He also alleged multiple procedural violations and assured the press that further details — including evidence of legal misconduct — would be made public soon.
The case continues to draw attention both domestically and internationally, as pressure mounts on the Chadian government to ensure due process and uphold democratic freedoms.
