Chad has received a major boost in its fight against a deadly cholera outbreak after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) delivered 30 tonnes of medical supplies to the country.
The consignment, handed over on August 23, is aimed at supporting the Chadian Ministry of Public Health in its efforts to contain the epidemic that has gripped refugee camps in the east of the country.
According to official figures, the outbreak has already affected 776 people and claimed 53 lives.
The shipment was formally received by the Minister of Social Action, Zara Mahamat Issa, who was standing in for the Minister of Public Health. Speaking at the handover ceremony, she conveyed the government’s appreciation for the humanitarian gesture.
“On behalf of the Chadian government, we express our gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for this act of solidarity,” she said.
The aid is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the national response, particularly in vulnerable areas where access to clean water and sanitation remains limited. Authorities have been working with international partners to step up medical interventions and prevent the disease from spreading further.
Cholera, a waterborne disease often linked to poor sanitation, continues to pose serious health risks in parts of Chad, especially within refugee camps where living conditions are fragile. The government has vowed to intensify awareness campaigns and deploy emergency teams to affected regions in an effort to bring the situation under control.
This latest contribution from the UAE reflects growing international concern over the epidemic and underscores the importance of coordinated global action in tackling health crises in conflict-affected and displaced communities.
