Chad’s Joint Disarmament Commission on Monday presented a large cache of confiscated arms and illicit goods to authorities in Batha province.
The event, held on July 14, was overseen by the General Delegate to Batha, Major General Ahmat Goukouni Mourali.
The seizures, made as part of an ongoing disarmament operation launched on March 15, 2025, included 193 war weapons of varying calibers, a range of bladed weapons, military gear, and a substantial quantity of adulterated products.
Addressing attendees during the presentation, the Commission’s Coordinator, General Barkaye Koré, issued a renewed appeal to citizens across the country to voluntarily hand over illegal weapons.
“The importance of this approach for peace and security cannot be overstated,” he said, stressing the critical role of public cooperation in reducing armed violence and fostering national stability.
Major General Ahmat Goukouni Mourali commended the Commission’s efforts and highlighted the vital need for further state investment in the region’s security infrastructure.
“We urge the government to strengthen support for our forces with more vehicles and manpower so we can fulfill our mission of protecting the population,” he said.
The disarmament initiative is a core component of the national security agenda led by President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.
The strategy aims to curtail the circulation of illicit arms, reduce communal conflicts, and lay the groundwork for long-term peace across the country.
As the operation continues, authorities remain hopeful that enhanced security measures and citizen engagement will help turn the tide against illegal weapon proliferation in Chad.
