Most Chadian citizens, with the exception of officials, have faced a ban on entering the United States under measures introduced by President Donald Trump.
In response, the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Chadians Abroad, together with the U.S. Embassy in N’Djamena, launched a series of discussions on visa issues on August 21, 2025.
The inaugural meeting, held for Ministry staff, brought together the Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Security, Deputy Secretary General Mahamat Issa Zakaria, and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires William Flens.
Its main aim was to clarify the reasons behind the suspension of visa issuance for Chadian nationals.
Official figures indicate that nearly half of Chadian visa holders in 2023 overstayed their authorized period in the United States, with a reported rate of 49.5%. U.S. representatives stressed that such an overstay rate is considered unsustainable.
“No country can accept such a situation,” they said.
The Embassy emphasized that the travel ban is neither punitive nor permanent. Rather, it is intended to highlight a serious problem affecting the American immigration system.
Respect for visa regulations is presented as a fundamental condition for mutual trust and the continuation of human, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
A joint committee has been established to remind travelers of the importance of adhering to immigration laws and to raise awareness of the potential consequences of violations.
The U.S. reiterated that beyond enforcement, its objective remains the protection of citizens and travelers from both nations, while maintaining strong cooperation with Chad, a strategic partner in multiple areas.
Chargé d’Affaires William Flens welcomed the openness shown by the Chadian side, calling the initial meeting “positive and promising.” He added, “We look forward to continuing these discussions to strengthen cooperation and deepen the relationship between the United States and Chad.”
Further discussions are planned with public authorities, civil society, and media representatives. The joint effort aims to develop a balanced, long-term solution to the visa and travel concerns affecting Chadian nationals.
