In a decisive move to ease tensions between farmers and herders during Chad’s transhumance season, the sub-prefect of Baro, Adelil Doumoullah Chogar, convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday focused on fostering peaceful cohabitation and sustainable land use practices.
The gathering, held in Baro, brought together key figures including representatives from the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), canton chiefs, and departmental heads.
At the heart of the discussions were critical issues related to the regulation of pastoral movements—particularly the strict adherence to designated transhumance corridors, the demarcation of livestock parking zones, and the proper management of watering ponds.
These measures form part of a broader state strategy aimed at curbing the perennial disputes between agricultural and pastoral communities—conflicts that often escalate during seasonal migrations of livestock.
Speaking at the meeting, Sub-Prefect Chogar urged canton leaders to work through their village chiefs to communicate the importance of respecting state directives.
“The strict application of these rules is essential,” he emphasized, calling for “active cooperation between local populations and administrative and security authorities.”
The sub-prefect underscored that peaceful coexistence must not remain an abstract concept but rather a concrete, community-driven commitment.
“We must ensure that every citizen, whether farmer or herder, feels protected and supported,” he said.
The initiative reflects a growing awareness among local authorities of the need to address resource management and intercommunal relations with foresight and diplomacy.
As pressures mount over shrinking grazing land and water resources, the meeting signals Baro’s intention to lead by example in promoting conflict prevention through dialogue, planning, and accountability.
With the transhumance season underway, the coming weeks will be crucial in testing the effectiveness of these resolutions, as well as the capacity of local leadership to safeguard harmony across diverse communities.
