Chad appoints new national gendarmerie chief Amid push for stronger security Unity

General Djiddo Mahamat Haggar has officially taken command as the new Director General of Chad’s National Gendarmerie, following a formal installation ceremony held in N’Djamena on July 26. The appointment was presided over by the Minister of Public Security and Immigration, Ali Ahmat Aghabache.
General Haggar assumes leadership of the internal security institution just days after his appointment on July 23, succeeding General Saleh Touma Houno, who had served in the position for nine months.
The leadership change comes at a time when national authorities are pushing for greater effectiveness and cohesion within the country’s security apparatus.
During the handover ceremony, Minister Aghabache called for renewed dedication and coordination among all ranks of the gendarmerie to ensure the safety of citizens and the protection of public property.
He emphasized the need for institutional unity, discipline, and the rejection of division based on communal lines.
“Unity of forces, respect for hierarchy, and the banishment of communitarianism” are, he said, “essential values” for fulfilling the duties assigned to the gendarmerie.
“Installing the new Director General, the Minister of Public Security and Immigration called for frank collaboration between the various officials and agents for the security of Chadians and their property.”
The ceremony took place amid a broader wave of recent appointments and reshuffles within Chad’s security services—changes that followed a stern directive from the country’s president, urging top officials to tighten control and improve coordination.
Observers view General Haggar’s appointment as a strategic move aimed at bolstering national security and restoring trust in law enforcement agencies across the country.
As the new head of the gendarmerie, General Haggar is expected to bring stability and strategic vision to an institution critical to Chad’s internal peace and enforcement of law and order.
