A total of 160 Chadian nationals have been voluntarily repatriated from Libya as part of an ongoing humanitarian initiative facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday, August 28, 2025.
The operation, conducted in close collaboration with the Chadian embassy in Tripoli and Libyan authorities, forms part of a wider programme aimed at the repatriation, protection, and reintegration of migrants.
Officials said the initiative extends beyond the act of returning citizens home, providing them with critical assistance to rebuild their lives and reintegrate socially and economically.
“This return is part of the repatriation, protection and reintegration of migrants programme, a joint initiative of the Chadian authorities, the IOM and the Libyan authorities,” the ministry stated.
The repatriation effort comes amid longstanding concerns over the plight of Chadian migrants in Libya, many of whom have faced difficult conditions due to political instability, conflict, and migration control challenges in the region.
According to a 2022 report by the IOM, an estimated 82,180 Chadian nationals were residing in Libya as of January that year. Authorities say this latest operation represents a step forward in addressing the needs of those wishing to return voluntarily while also promoting sustainable reintegration in Chad.
This initiative aligns with broader regional cooperation, following agreements between Chad and Libya aimed at regularizing the status of Chadian citizens detained or stranded on Libyan soil.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that reintegration support for the returnees would include socio-economic assistance to ensure a stable transition back into their communities.
