The Central African Republic is moving closer to its December general elections, with a presidential decree convening the electorate expected on September 29, 2025.
This step, outlined by the National Elections Authority (ANE), is a critical milestone in the organisation of the upcoming presidential, legislative, municipal, and regional votes.
The decree is expected to officially set the election date, determine the voting system, establish deadlines for candidate submissions, and mark the start and end of the electoral campaign.
According to the Central African Electoral Code, the electorate must be convened at least 90 days before elections, or 60 days in the case of a referendum.
This official act signals the start of the electoral process, informing the public of key deadlines and ensuring transparency in accordance with constitutional requirements.
Article 35 of the Electoral Code specifies that voter convening is done through a decree issued by the Council of Ministers, following a proposal from the ANE.
Article 45 governs the processing and publication of provisional candidate lists, while additional provisions regulate campaign rules, submission of candidacies, proclamation of provisional results, and any appeals.
These measures are designed to guarantee a transparent and legally compliant electoral process.
The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions.
The opposition, organised under the Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution (BRDC), has criticised the process, describing it as opaque and raising concerns over fairness.
Nevertheless, the ANE has reaffirmed that the electoral timetable remains on track, with the submission of candidacies expected to begin on October 2.
The signing of the presidential decree, anticipated this Monday, is likely to reignite political debate as parties prepare for the elections. Observers note that the move marks the official start of a complex and closely watched campaign, with the outcome expected to shape the country’s political landscape in the months ahead.
