Yahya Bello, a prominent figure within Cameroon’s Party for National Reconciliation (PCRN), has announced his resignation from the party just months before the country’s presidential election.
In a letter dated June 26 and addressed to party president Cabral Libii, Bello, who served both as a member of the National Steering Committee and as Special Envoy in the president’s cabinet, formally stepped down from all his roles.
This includes his position as the party’s National Secretary for Communication.
Though Bello did not provide specific reasons for his departure, he wrote, “This decision marks the end of a commitment I carried out with loyalty and which now fits into a personal and political dynamic that I consider unavoidable.
” He concluded by urging Cabral Libii to formally acknowledge his departure.
The resignation has triggered speculation within the party ranks and among political observers.
Some PCRN members have claimed Bello is set to join the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), led by former government minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who recently declared his presidential ambitions.
However, Bello has firmly denied these claims, calling them “falsehoods” and asserting that he has not joined any political party since resigning.
Notably, Bello has been seen in close circles with Guibaï Gatama, a vocal advocate for the northern region and leader of the “11 Million Northerners” movement.
Gatama welcomed Bello, along with Abdoullaye Nana, a former deputy president of the ruling CPDM party’s Mbere Centre section, into his coalition aimed at uniting northern political forces ahead of the elections.
Their alignment is widely viewed as part of a broader effort to consolidate influence in the north and reshape Cameroon’s political landscape as the presidential race draws closer.
