Former Indomitable Lion Serge Branco has publicly criticised Cameroon’s head coach Marc Brys, despite the team’s 3-0 victory over Mauritius in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The win, achieved in Yaoundé, failed to convince all supporters. Branco, a former defender who played for Stuttgart and Shakhtar Donetsk, took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with Brys’s tactical approach and the overall team performance.
“For me, the 3 points and the victory were important, because the way the team played against such a weak team from Mauritius, whose level does not go beyond amateurism, is questionable,” Branco said, visibly disappointed by what he described as a lacklustre display.
He criticised the Belgian coach’s team selection, describing it as inconsistent and poorly thought out.
“Between a coach who is inconsistent in his choice of starting eleven, and a hesitant and complacent Baleba, I have reasons to remain positive only when I see youngsters like Nagida, Etta Eyong and Avom showing good intentions,” he added.
While acknowledging the promising performances of some young players, Branco urged Brys to show more fairness and stability in his line-ups.
“I would like Marc to avoid a risky line-up like the one against Mauritius, with Nouhou Tolo in the centre, Mbeumo on the bench and Choupo-Moting as number ten.
If these players no longer have a place, let them stay on the bench.”
Branco concluded with a call for better balance between senior players and emerging talents. “Namaso is competitive in Ligue 1, so he has to play. Marc Brys will excuse us with Tolo, Ngadeu, Choupo, Aboubakar, who have to coach the youngsters and play parts of the game, not start when it’s time to get to work.”
His remarks reflect the growing tension within the Cameroonian football community, where questions continue to swirl around the national team’s direction under Brys. Despite the convincing scoreline, many believe the Indomitable Lions must show greater cohesion and tactical discipline to reassure their supporters ahead of tougher matches to come.
