The country is in mourning following the death of Gounoko Haounaye, former governor of the Littoral region and Minister of Transport, who passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, after a prolonged illness.
His sudden departure has prompted a wave of tributes from officials and citizens alike, recognising a career defined by dedication, humility, and public service.
Haounaye’s career spanned several decades, during which he ascended through the ranks of Cameroon’s civil administration with distinction.
Beginning as Prefect of Logone-et-Chari, he later served as governor of the Littoral region before assuming the Transport portfolio and chairing the Board of Directors of the National Port Authority.
“He embodied a generation of public servants who had the nation’s best interests at heart,” said a close colleague, reflecting on his enduring influence within the government.
His tenure as governor is particularly remembered for his hands-on approach to crises, notably during the Kenya Airways crash in Douala, when he personally surveyed the muddy hills of Banga Pongo to oversee recovery efforts.
Beyond his official duties, Haounaye was widely admired for his humility and accessibility.
Léo Maxwell, a Cameroonian citizen, recalled, “The man often had a drink in a bar in the Brazzaville district of Douala on weekends, in communion with the people.”
This closeness to ordinary citizens distinguished him from many political figures and earned him enduring respect.
Tributes on social media and from government officials have celebrated Haounaye’s unwavering commitment to public service and his exemplary leadership. His legacy, marked by both professional competence and personal integrity, is expected to inspire future generations of Cameroonian leaders.
The Cameroonian government is anticipated to announce funeral arrangements shortly. The passing of Gounoko Haounaye marks the end of an era in Cameroon’s administration, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and a model of leadership deeply connected to the people.
