With less than 45 days to go before Cameroon’s 2025 presidential election, CRTV Nord, the regional station of Cameroon Radio Television, is intensifying preparations to ensure responsible and impartial media coverage.
On Wednesday, August 27, the station organised a discussion on the theme “Press Writing During Election Periods,” aimed at equipping journalists with the tools and guidelines necessary for professional reporting during the high-stakes electoral period.
Under the direction of station head Issa Ahmadou, staff focused on three core principles to guide their coverage. “Objectivity of facts: Only facts should be reported when describing political meetings,” he said. Journalists were also reminded of the importance of “honesty and editorial line: Respect for professional ethics and the vision of CRTV’s general management is imperative.”
Additionally, Ahmadou emphasised the “impartiality of language: Journalists must favor neutral language devoid of any bias.”
The northern region of Cameroon is under particular scrutiny this election cycle, as it is the home region of two presidential candidates, Issa Tchiroma and Bello Bouba Maïgari. Observers note that media reporting in this area will be critical to ensuring a transparent and fair election.
Journalists discussed challenges unique to election periods, including navigating politically charged environments and balancing public interest with professional ethics. The session aimed to reinforce the role of the media as a pillar of democratic accountability while promoting responsible reporting standards.
CRTV Nord’s initiative underscores the station’s commitment to upholding the credibility and integrity of electoral reporting in Cameroon. By adhering to principles of objectivity, honesty, and impartiality, the regional broadcaster aims to provide citizens with accurate information, helping voters make informed decisions during the upcoming election.
As the election approaches, CRTV Nord’s efforts reflect a broader push within Cameroon’s media to maintain transparency and professionalism in the face of heightened political tension.
