Bishop Sosthène Leopold Bayemi of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Obala is expected to be cleared of sexual harassment allegations that have recently sparked controversy in Cameroon’s Centre region.
An audio recording circulating on social media accused the bishop of inappropriate conduct, a claim that has unsettled members of the Christian community.
The recording, reportedly shared by a self-proclaimed whistleblower, alleged that the cleric made sexual advances toward members of his congregation.
However, sources in Yaoundé indicate that the matter may soon be resolved in the bishop’s favour.
“Bishop Sosthène Leopold Bayemi will be acquitted of making sexual advances against members of his community as alleged by a person operating deep within a political space in Yaoundé,” said journalist Rita Akana.
Ms Akana also suggested that the controversy is politically motivated.
“The Vatican is very much aware that the Roman Catholic Church in Cameroon does not have kissing and hugging issues! let alone porn videos,” she added, noting that the church in the Centre and South regions has often been associated with the ruling CPDM party.
The Diocese of Obala, situated on the outskirts of the capital, is one of the country’s poorest and relies heavily on donations, mainly from senior political figures in Yaoundé. The bishop’s presence at the Unity Palace in support of President Paul Biya, 93, during preparations for the upcoming presidential election, has further fueled speculation over the political undertones of the allegations.
Local observers believe that once the case is formally resolved, the diocese will emerge more united. The Vatican has not yet issued an official statement, but church officials remain confident that the scandal will soon be laid to rest.
