Cameroonian political tensions have flared following remarks by André Luther Meka, a leading voice within the Cameroon People’s Democratic Rally (CPDM), who launched a stinging critique against opposition figure Maurice Kamto and his Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC).
Reacting to reports of a potential alliance between the MRC and the Cameroon National Citizens’ Movement (MCNC), Meka cast doubt on the financial integrity of Kamto’s recent campaign fundraising drive, claiming that the billions raised serve personal ends rather than national aspirations.
“The Cameroon National Citizens’ Movement (MCNC) is asking Kamto for 300 million to invest in the presidential elections. He is crying, claiming that taxation is too high. I really have the impression that you don’t know that Kamto is greedy and tight-fisted?” Meka wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.
Meka also alleged that funds previously raised during Kamto’s detention at the Kondengui prison were never distributed among other political detainees.
“All the financial aid and support Kamto received while he was detained in Kodengui was buried in his pocket. Since Célestin Djamen, Paul Eric Kingue, and Penda Ekoka were in the same cell as him, they saw nothing but fire. They received no kopecks,” he claimed.
The CPDM spokesperson further argued that the MRC’s stated goal of raising six billion CFA francs to support Kamto’s presidential bid was merely a pretext.
“The 6 billion raised for his candidacy helps him secure his retirement. Kamto is purely individualistic and stingy,” Meka asserted.
The statement adds to an already charged political atmosphere in Cameroon as preparations intensify ahead of the 2025 presidential elections. Kamto, a former Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Justice and a prominent opposition leader, remains one of the most watched figures on the political scene.
The allegations, however, have not been addressed publicly by Kamto or the MRC.
