Nine members of Cameroon’s security forces have been killed this week in a series of violent attacks across the country, highlighting the persistent threat posed by separatist groups and extremist networks.
In Muyuka, eight soldiers lost their lives when an improvised explosive device detonated during a security operation. “These men were carrying out a security mission when the tragedy occurred,” a military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed.
The violence extended to Limbe, where a gendarme was shot dead by separatist elements, underscoring the ongoing instability in the North West and South West regions. Authorities have described the back-to-back incidents as a “black week” for the nation’s defense forces.
Simultaneously, the Far North region experienced a fresh incursion by Boko Haram militants. The extremist group attacked civilians in a local community, spreading terror and adding to the mounting security challenges faced by the government.
In response to this surge in violence, Cameroonian military leaders are reviewing their defensive strategy, with a particular focus on the Popular Defense initiative. “Popular defense will be emphasized to better protect our fellow citizens,” the military source explained, pointing to plans for greater community involvement in safeguarding local areas.
The government remains committed to eradicating terrorist activity on Cameroonian soil, despite the heavy toll on security forces. Officials stress that strengthening local defense structures and intelligence coordination will be central to neutralizing these threats and protecting civilian populations.
