The United States Congress has commended Burkina Faso for its recent progress in reclaiming territory from armed groups and advancing national security efforts.
On Friday, August 29, 2025, Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, President of Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), met with a delegation from the US Congress led by Senator James Austin Scott.
The meeting, held in Ouagadougou, focused on areas of shared interest including economic development, agricultural initiatives, and security cooperation.
According to the Burkinabe Parliament, Senator Scott lauded the government’s achievements, highlighting the success of the country’s agricultural offensive and the reconquest of national territory.
“We are impressed by the progress made in reclaiming lands previously controlled by armed groups and the dynamism of Burkina Faso’s economic sector,” the delegation noted.
The Burkinabe authorities reported having regained control over more than 70% of the territory affected by insurgent activity.
Dr. Bougouma expressed his appreciation for the recognition, describing the meeting as a “significant step in strengthening the bonds of cooperation and friendship between Burkina Faso and the United States.” He emphasized that international support and partnerships are crucial in sustaining security gains and fostering long-term development in the country.
The discussions also underscored the importance of collaboration on economic and agricultural programs, reflecting Burkina Faso’s broader strategy to combine security measures with socio-economic growth. This dual approach aims to consolidate state authority, improve livelihoods, and reduce the appeal of armed groups in vulnerable regions.
The US delegation’s visit marks a continuation of international attention on Burkina Faso’s fight against terrorism and its efforts to stabilise areas long affected by insurgency. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a focus on sustainable security and economic resilience.
Burkina Faso’s recent territorial reconquests represent a significant milestone in its ongoing struggle against extremism, and international acknowledgment of these efforts provides a boost to the country’s diplomatic and strategic standing.
